Final expense insurance

Ease the burden on your family when the time comes.

Final expense insurance is a smaller permanent life insurance policy meant to help loved ones pay for a funeral, burial or cremation, and other end-of-life costs — so they can focus on each other.

  • Smaller, permanent coverage
  • Simplified underwriting is common
  • Benefit paid to your beneficiary

The basics

Simple coverage for a specific need.

Final expense coverage is about giving your family time and choices, not paperwork and bills.

Final expense policies are usually whole life insurance with smaller death benefits than traditional coverage. Premiums are commonly level for life, and the coverage doesn’t expire as long as premiums are paid.

Many final expense policies use simplified underwriting — health questions instead of a medical exam. Some policies for people with significant health conditions are “guaranteed issue,” which typically means a limited benefit during the first years.

The benefit goes to your beneficiary, who can use it for funeral costs, medical bills, or other final expenses. It is different from a pre-need funeral contract, which is purchased through a funeral home for specific goods and services.

Needs it may address

Costs final expense coverage may help with.

Funeral or memorial service

Service, casket or urn, and related arrangements.

Burial or cremation

Cemetery plot, headstone, or cremation costs.

Final medical bills

Out-of-pocket costs that remain after other coverage.

Small debts and estate costs

Credit cards, utilities, and settling affairs.

How it works

How it usually works.

  1. Choose a benefit amount

Based on expected funeral costs and other final expenses.

  2. Answer health questions

Many policies don’t require an exam; answers determine eligibility and price.

  3. Pay a level premium

Premiums are generally fixed for life on whole life final expense policies.

  4. Benefit is paid to your beneficiary

Subject to the policy’s terms, including any graded or waiting period.

Key features and important limitations

Key features

  • Permanent coverage that doesn’t expire while premiums are paid.
  • Simplified underwriting is common — often no medical exam.
  • Level premiums on many policies.
  • Beneficiary can use the benefit however it’s needed.

Important limitations

  • Death benefits are smaller than traditional life insurance.
  • Guaranteed-issue and graded policies may pay only a return of premium or partial benefit in the first two or three years.
  • Cost per dollar of coverage is higher than fully underwritten policies.
  • Over many years, total premiums paid can exceed the death benefit.

Who it’s for

Final expense coverage may suit you if you…

  • Want to spare loved ones the cost of a funeral and final bills.
  • Are older or have health conditions that make traditional coverage difficult.
  • Don’t need a large death benefit but want lifelong coverage.
  • Have savings earmarked for other goals and don’t want to use them for funeral costs.

Questions

Common questions

Is final expense insurance the same as burial insurance?

The terms are often used interchangeably. Both usually describe a smaller whole life policy meant for end-of-life costs.

What is a graded or waiting period?

Some policies — especially guaranteed issue — limit the death benefit for natural causes during the first years, often paying a return of premiums plus interest instead. Accidental death is often covered in full from the start. Check the specific policy.

How is this different from a pre-need funeral plan?

A pre-need contract is bought through a funeral home for specific goods and services. Final expense insurance pays cash to your beneficiary, who can use it at any provider or for other bills.
